Module 9: Digital Marketing Specialties Activity

While there are plenty of jobs for digital marketing generalists, there are also many jobs for folks who specialize in one or two specific areas. Companies frequently post jobs for SEO Specialists, Paid Search Managers, or Social Media Strategists, just to name a few. Throughout the course, reflect on which topics, activities, and projects you most enjoy. You may want to spend time outside of class further developing your skills in that area.

Activity: Specialty Research

The following activity is designed to help you better understand the different specialties within the digital marketing field, using internet research and job postings.

Instructions

  • Use the internet to find three digital marketing agencies near you. Take a few moments to browse through their websites.

Having trouble finding a nearby agency? Here are some you can use instead:

  • RevLocal
  • Thrive
  • WebFX
  • Vivial
  • Wunderman

  • Read each agency’s overview of the services it provides. Make a list of the four most common services you notice.

  • Research the four terms you noted in the previous step. In one to three sentences, define each term in your own words. Note the ones you find most interesting.
  • Look at the Careers pages of your agencies. Are they hiring specialists in the field(s) you find interesting?
  • Go to Indeed.com and set your location in the Where field. Note: If you don’t live in a metropolitan area, we recommend increasing the search radius from the Distance drop-down menu on the left-hand side of the page.
  • Type job titles for the topics that interest you in the What field. You can also search for the speciality using keywords; e.g., SEO or native content.
  • Find two postings for related jobs within 50–100 miles of your location. Copy and paste the job descriptions into a Google Doc in your Google Drive folder. Continue to refer back to these job descriptions as you progress through the course to remind yourself what you’re working toward.
  • Submit your findings as a Google Doc by copy and pasting the Google doc link in Bootcamp Spot. Don't forget to adjust the share settings so it is viewable by anyone with the link.
