Module 8: Prepare for the Job Search
Throughout this program, you will work closely with the career team to prepare for landing your next role. The goal of career services can be summed up in a single word: empowerment.
We are here to motivate you, offer support, and provide strategies for reaching beyond your comfort zone to find the right opportunity for you. And remember that the more information you share, the better equipped our team will be to help in your search.
Not looking to move companies or roles? Not a problem, career services can provide you with support on getting that next promotion, negotiating a salary increase, marketing your new skills at your current org, and/or freelancing.
“So far, the career portion of the program has been the part that has really surpassed my expectations, so another thanks for being the key figure in that regard.” ~ Mike C. (Boot camp Graduate)
What You Need to Succeed
- A professional narrative that showcases your strengths, skills, and passions.
- An ability to showcase your previous skills and how they add to your value as a digital marketing professional.
- A friendly demeanor—people hire people they like!
- An ability to talk about digital marketing, using industry language.
- Practice, practice, practice. The more interviews and networking events you attend, the more prepared you'll be for your next opportunity.
What to Expect from Career Services
When transitioning to a new role and/or career, a reasonable timeline for the search process—from applying for positions to accepting a company's offer—is anywhere from 30 to 90 days. With that said, what you put into the search is what you get out of it! But not to worry, the career team will be with you along the way, whether you start preparing during the program or post-graduation.
We know how much time and effort you put into your digital marketing coursework and we have created career-focused content throughout the course. So as not to overwhelm you, we have also timed key communications from career services to start off small in the beginning of the program and build towards the end when we have seen most graduates have picked up pace on their career journey.
“I can’t say this will work for everyone, but if you truly apply yourself and give it your all, [using Career Services] can be life changing.” ~ Tim L. (Boot camp Graduate)
Landing Your Next Role
In partnership with our employer partners, we have found that bootcamp grads who follow the steps below have the most success:
1. Start and start early
-
Become employer-ready by graduation and work towards becoming employer-competitive along the way.
-
Employer-ready means that you have the minimum requirements to enter into a typical job application process. Your job search materials are complete and solid, and with some luck, an employer will notice you among other applications.
-
Employer-competitive you have positioned yourself for success through networking, company research, excellent professional materials, and a strong demonstration of your commitment to ongoing learning. Check out the Digital Marketing Career Engagement Network site for more support.
2. Work with Career Material Advisors (CMA)
-
Submit your materials via any of the Career Services Milestones within Bootcamp Spot and then a CMA will be assigned to work with you on all of your milestones.
-
Employer-recommended digital marketing materials include: a brand statement, a resume, a LinkedIn profile, and a portfolio.
-
Continue the LinkedIn profile set up from Module 2 to reflect your next steps post-graduation.
-
Review support materials and samples: brand statements, resume criteria and templates, LinkedIn profile criteria, and portfolios - choose between a site or a deck version.
-
-
CMAs provide unlimited feedback on all of your material submissions.
-
Although you will see suggested submission dates, you can complete the milestones in any order and at any time.
3. Attend Career events
-
Events help you refine your career materials, prepare for behavioral and digital marketing interviews, answer your questions about what it really takes to land a new role, develop your elevator pitch, market your freelance business, get the perspective of employers and what they look for in candidates, and much more!
-
Find the schedule of events here: Online Events.
4. Partner with your Career Coach * Endless studies show that networking is the #1 way to land a new role and new clients.
- During and after the program, attending networking events and connecting with professionals online will help you develop a professional narrative to market yourself to employers and clients alike.
“Working with [my Career Coach] has been instrumental in my journey to a career I love.” ~ Nicole F. (Boot camp Graduate)

Job Search Myths
Myth 1: You have to master all technologies taught in this course.
- Facts: You'll learn so much in this boot camp that it'll make your head spin. Remind yourself that you don't need to master everything in only a few weeks. Focus on topics that engage you most, and increase your skills with new technologies via online resources.
Myth 2: You need previous experience in digital marketing.
- Facts: If you don't have any prior experience in this field, don't worry! Many companies will let you learn on the job, and they will appreciate the unique perspective and set of skills that you bring to the table.
Myth 3: You need every skill listed in the job description.
- Facts: Job descriptions can be misleading, especially if they are written by someone who is not familiar with the technology (as they often are). Apply even if you're unsure whether you fit every requirement in the description. Use your cover letter to showcase your strengths, like your ability to learn quickly. (Your boot camp experience is a great example!)
Myth 4: You need a certificate of completion from the boot camp.
- Facts: You don't need a certificate to begin applying to jobs; you can start applying as soon as you’ve worked with career services to develop your career profile. Don't be afraid to start early! Practice makes perfect, and you'll only get better with each interview.
